Unfortunately, it is very real.
As the internet becomes easier to access, cyber crime in Australia continues to be a threat. Whether we use a computer, laptop or mobile phone we collect and share information constantly. Our data is at risk daily. With cybercrime becoming an attractive way for criminals to steal information, does your current security measures protect you?
Here are 5 common questions I am asked often, which you should be aware of too.
1. What is cybercrime?
Cybercrime, or computer crime,is the use of computers and the internet to break the law. Remember the movie Identity Thief starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, a con artist who stole Jason’s identity? This is one example of cybercrime. Other kinds include:
- online scams
- attacks on your computer systems or websites
2. What is cyber security?
Cyber security is the protection of your technology and information from accidental or illicit access, corruption, theft or damage. Cyber security is ongoing and needs to be part of your daily business processes.
3. What is at risk?
Everything! If you use computers, the internet or technology as a part of your daily business operation, you are at risk. Whether on your PC, laptop, tablet, mobile phone, it can all be at risk.
4. Who could be a threat to your business?
This is a really tough question! Cyber criminals can be an individual or a group of people. They may not have a specific reason other than to cause havoc in your business. So consideration of who a cyber criminal could be are:
- criminals – out for financial gain or information, to illegally access your hardware and data or disrupt your business
- clients you do business with – to compromise your information with malicious intent
- business competitors – looking to gain an advantage over your business
- current or former employees – who accidentally or intentionally compromise your information or data.
5. What can I do about protecting my business from cyber threats?
To protect your business from cybercrime, try these tips:
- Keep all your computers, Point-of-sale (POS) systems current with all the latest software releases and updates
- Back-ups are a must! The more often you can back-up your data and information, the better. If you have high number of transactions you may wish to back-up daily.
- Develop clear policies and procedures for your business and employees. Outline the security measures you have put in place on how to protect your systems and information assets.
- Train new and existing staff on your cyber security policies and procedures and the steps to take if a cyber threat or cyber incident occurs.
